Hoot Hoot! ...in my Etsy shop now!

Hoot hoot hoot! I've been very carefully painting away at these one of a kind Halloweeny owls and now they are finally ready! This surprise flock have just landed in Etsy land...scoop them up my shop if you fancy them! :) Or...if you didn't want to go through Etsy, just email (vintagebycrystal@yahoo.com), and let me know which one(s) you'd like.

Hoot hoot hoot! All lined up on the garden fence...ready to fly away again!

(Update: They are SOLD OUT! Thanks so much!!)

Estate Sale Finds!

I haven't been to an estate sale in a while, but I did just find photos that I forgot to post of a sale I went to a few months ago. This sale was at a house right on Saratoga Lake and the view was beautiful! But I was much more interested in the view in the basement...which is where I found this folly collections of blow mold jack-o-lanterns and a pair of die cuts.

I also found some non-melted gurly candles...too cute!! I usually don't pick up candles because I'm afraid they'll melt where ever I store them...but these couldn't be passed up!

I really like those two bunny heads and have them sitting near my work table on top of one of my shelves where the wind blows them down all the time. I have a nice small collection of tin eggs and am always on look out for more.

A cool jumping frog and a herd of small animals. I love toys!!

I also really like guide books about nature and natural history. This bird book is filled with beautiful illustrations as well as lots of info on each species.

I've been wanting to do a bird species series in spun cotton...I think this book will be a great reference!

A teeny tiny lamp and a very useful hanger.

Noise makers are always a hit at parties....maybe I'll have to throw one now!

I should keep my eye open for more estate sale listings...they are always a trove of undiscovered and hopefully un-marked up treasures! :)

A Walk Through the Woods...

I was away for a little bit, but now I'm back! And where did I go? Well...I went for a walk in the woods...

Moosewood that is. The yearly ritual that started with my great-grandfather. Moosewood is the hunting lodge him and his buddies built way back almost 100 years ago in the Adirondacks. Once a year everyone from my dad's side of the family gathers there to live like they did in the old days and to relax, go swimming, hiking, shoot cans with bb guns, eat lots of junk food or simply just rock on the porch in those old chairs that have beaver teeth marks on them from when they were left out over night.

My sister Sara and I went for a long and wonderful walk almost as soon as we got there. She wanted to test out my camera, so she took lots of pictures of everything and anything.

I was searching the forest floor for interesting specimens...

Like this silly little caterpillar who was trying to dig his head in the sand.

Or this beautiful array of toadstools...and one puffball.

We found a long horned beetle and had to compare it to my tattoo to make sure it wasn't the bad invasive kind that kills trees...it wasn't. My sister got some beetle tattoos from dontmovewood.com or something like that. Ben got the matching beetle. And no, not real ones tattoos! :)
A "tiny" posted sign to keep unwanted hunters and fisherman out.

A pine needle mustache and pine cone eyeballs.

I held my hair up woodland fairy style....

...and then my sister elaborated on the whole concept.

She found a log in a tree.

And I managed to get the camera from her and snap some pretty pictures of my pretty sister.

Mud people...

The King Gnome's throne.

Can you see me?

How about now?

Some pretty red leaves! Fall is coming!! Yippee!

One of the best parts of Moosewood territory? Mud puddles galore! Frogs love to live there.

But we can also swim in the stream, or just bring some water into the air.

Happy trails summertime! :)

Garage Sale Goodies!

First off...thank you so much everyone for a great update last Friday! The majority of characters were scooped up in a jiffy! The rest will be showing their faces on Etsy. :)

Now I'll show you goodies Ben and I found recently at a variety of yard sales...

This is the loot in it's entirety...the old dilapidated cabinet was free on the side of the road during a neighborhood yard sale and has been sitting on the porch for a while. I haven't decided where to put it and haven't gotten around to giving it a good scrub. So there it will sit until later.

I got the cool trash bin for one of the rooms we are redoing. It may or may not get a coat of spray paint. The architectural salvage piece was a steal at 2 bucks. I'm not sure what to do with it yet, but for now it will look great just sitting on a shelf. Maybe someday it will join with another piece of wood and become and becoming little shelf itself.

This little pile of awesomeness I got last Friday (yes I stuck out for a bit after the update rush had passed!). My mom and sister picked me up for a nice lunch in town and we passed by a sale that we couldn't pass up on the way back. It was worth the stop! Everything here was $8! The old scale works great and will go in the bathroom upstairs (we already have cool vintage scale downstairs). The puppy planter has a chipped ear, but it makes him all the more endearing. The faux bois shelf liner can be used for some project or another I'm sure. That thing with the cross the guy told me was a cover for an outdoor water pipe and I love the shape of that coffee mug. The feather is from Rocky, my mom's rooster.

A ten cent plate and a grass clipping covered milk glass piece. The lady said the grass was free. Not bad!

I just love a fabulous assortment of old quirky things. Ben picked out the travel chess board. It's actually quite nice and the pieces are made of stone. I retro alarm clock will go in the guest room and I've been wanting long handled spoons! Perfect for getting stuff out of jars without getting your hand sticky. A little pill box some cool jars and books. One of the books is about growing leafy greens. I am always up for learning more about that!

I overlooked this trophy pitcher at first...but when I saw that it had a squirrel on the front, I added it to my pile. It's from the 1965 Squirrel Tournament...whatever that is.

I come across so many old bottle during my hunting, but these were more interesting than most. The skinny one says "Mrs. Watson's Soothing Syrup"...that sounds nice to me. The other is from Albany NY. It's always good to have some local stuff, right?

I'm not sure if this will be a good read or not, but I had to have it. It seems to have a lot of stories about dogs inside. We'll see if they're any good!

I love things in miniature! And old sinkers box. I don't fish, so I wasn't disappointed that it was empty.

This darling horse holder was made by the grandfather of the woman I bought it from. I thought it would be charming in a kids room.

Also from the same sale as the horse came this glass jar chicken feeder. As soon as I get a coop, I'm getting chickens, so I couldn't pass this pretty AND useful thing up.

A few ornaments and a mouse wheel for the two deer mice I have that the cats brought up from the basement.

And old piano light was found here in town. I'm not sure how it attaches, but I'm sure we can figure something out.

And lastly, an old wooden crate and a metal butterfly.

A little bit of everything picked up from here and there... :)

Pre-Halloween Update

Three Little Pumpkins - SOLD

Anyone with a vegetable garden will know that right about now is the time to really start hauling in all the goodies. Tomatoes, carrots, parsnips, turnips, brussel sprouts, etc. Sometimes you'll get a carrot with two fat stubby legs that look like they're dancing. Or a misshapen tomato that appears to have grown it's own shiny nose. I swear, some of these veggies come to life. And even though we don't always see them fully animated, somewhere, in our imaginations, they frolic by moonlight and dance in circles holding roots. They stack themselves to make complete bodies and walk about when no one is looking. With them come the goblins and witches...hooting and hollering. The ghosts join in and the black cats watch safely from a gnarled tree branch. And all of this makes for a merry Halloween.

As usual, blog readers get first dibs on my new spun cotton one-of-kind figures. Click on photos to enlarge. If you see something(s) you love, just email me at vintagebycrystal@yahoo.com and I'll let you know if they're still available. First come first served! I'll update item statuses in this post as often as I can to make it easier for you to know what's available. Items often get scooped up quickly, so make your selection as swiftly as you can, you can always add available pieces to your order later.
Also feel free to include second choices in case your first choice is unavailable, but make sure you label them "second choice".

Shipping is $3.50 for one item and $1 per additional item up to $6.50, then additional pieces are free. All paid orders will ship out immediately and should arrive within a few days. I send Paypal invoices via email unless you specify that you'd rather pay via check. And of course email me if you have any questions! Happy Shopping!
